Methodology
Data coverage
One picture a night from the Suomi NPP satellite, at about 01:00 WIB. NASA publishes it about a week later; we check every 6 hours and read the newly published nights in order.
Processing
- Pixels judged: those with a 2025 mean light of at least 3 nW/cm²/sr inside BIG boundaries.
- A judged night must be clear: NASA's quality flag is good, with no cloud, thin cloud or cloud shadow. NASA's filled-in values for cloudy nights are not used.
- Usual light: the median of clear nights in the 60 nights before, at least 6 of them. Dark: 20% of usual light or less. Dim: above 20% up to 50%.
- Smoke from fires dims lights too. A 1° box counts as smoky and is not judged when Deep Blue aerosol in it or a box next to it is 1.0 or more, or there are 500 or more hotspots within 2 boxes around it on that day and the day before.
- Wide outage in a city/regency: that night at least 30% of its pixels (and at least 20) were seen, and at least 30% of those seen were dark.
- The date is the evening; the picture is taken at about 01:00 WIB the next morning.
- Nights are read in order. When NASA has not published every part of Indonesia for a night, we wait up to 30 days; a part still missing after that is shown as not seen.
Limitations
- One picture a night, so an outage that is fixed before 01:00 WIB is not seen.
- Cloudy or smoky nights have no figure. They are shown as not seen, never as on.
- Dark is not always a power cut: cities empty during Lebaran travel, moving boats and light boats, gas flares and mines change too.
- A long outage slowly enters the usual light, so after a few weeks it no longer reads as dark.
- A 460 m pixel cannot tell one house or one street apart.
