A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Gorontalo on the morning of Monday, 12 October 2026. BMKG recorded it at 04:34 AM WIB, with an epicentre 29 km northwest of Pohuwato and a depth of 76 km.
BMKG said this earthquake had no tsunami potential. This was stated in BMKG's magnitude 5 and above earthquake list.
Where was it felt?
BMKG reported shaking in several areas of Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi. The strongest shaking was felt in Buol and Tolitoli. Shaking was also felt in Kab. Gorontalo, Kota Gorontalo, Kab. Bone Bolango, Kab. Boalemo, and Kab. Pohuwato.
BMKG report, with MMI intensity for each areaIII-IV Buol, III-IV Tolitoli, III Kab. Gorontalo, II-III Kota Gorontalo, II-III Kab. Bone Bolango, III Kab. Boalemo, III Kab. Pohuwato
The MMI scale measures how strongly shaking is felt at a place, not the earthquake's magnitude. BMKG describes these levels as:
- MMI II: Some people feel shaking; light hanging objects sway.
- MMI III: Shaking is clearly felt indoors, like a passing truck.
- MMI IV: Many people indoors and some outside feel shaking; pottery may break, doors and windows rattle, and walls make noise.
Why was it felt over a wide area?
The epicentre was 76 km below the surface. A depth of 60–300 km is classed as a intermediate earthquake. At this depth, shaking is generally weaker directly above the epicentre but may be felt over a wider area than a shallow earthquake of the same magnitude.

What should you do during an earthquake?
According to BMKG, during an earthquake:
- Inside a building: Protect your head and body from falling building debris.
- Outside or in an open area: Avoid nearby buildings.
- At the beach: Move away from the coast to avoid a tsunami.
- In the mountains: Avoid areas where landslides may occur.
After an earthquake:
- Leave the building in an orderly way.
- Use ordinary stairs, not escalators or lifts.
- Do not re-enter a building after an earthquake; it may collapse.
- Aftershocks may still occur near the earthquake area.
