Indonesia's mean air quality reached ISPU 100, on the edge of Unhealthy

The 13 October national mean reached ISPU 100. A one-month timeline shows how it changed; 164 of 514 city/regency points reached 101 or more.

Indonesia's mean air-quality index reached ISPU 100 on 13 October 2026: the upper edge of Moderate, one point below Unhealthy. Behind that national figure, 164 of 514 city and regency points were already Unhealthy or worse. The chart below shows the latest ten days, 4–13 October.

Indonesia's mean PM2.5 ISPU, 2026-10-04 to 2026-10-1310 24-hour estimates at 07:00 WIB, each from 514 city/regency points. Unhealthy starts at ISPU 101.8090100110UNHEALTHY LIMIT · 101+0408981310004 — 13 OCT · 07:00 WIB
The ten points are the mean PM2.5 across 514 locations converted to ISPU for the 24 hours ending at 07:00 WIB on that date. The mean reached 101 on 10 October and 100 on 13 October. The vertical axis begins at 80, so visual differences are larger than on a full scale. ISPU 100 is still Moderate. One national number cannot describe every city.

What has the government done?

So far, these are the steps authorities have reported to monitor air and help people make daily decisions:

  • 19–30 September — BMKG listed weather-modification operations for peatland wetting and fire response in several provinces. Official source.
  • 29 September — BNPB reported that 431.53 hectares had been extinguished through ground and air operations across six priority provinces. Official source.
  • 15 September — BNPB and the South Sumatra government strengthened fire response with 12,285 personnel and seven helicopters. Official source.

These three steps predate the 13 October snapshot. The data in this article cannot measure their effect on national air quality.

Major cities above the threshold

These are eight example city points above ISPU 100. The values are PM2.5 model estimates, not measurements that apply uniformly across each whole city.

Why is the national number 100?

The national figure averages PM2.5 across 514 representative points, then converts that mean to ISPU. It is 100, at the top of the Moderate category. Yet 164 individual points are at 101 or above. CAMS uses a grid of about 45 km, so nearby cities can share an estimate. This site calculates ISPU from PM2.5 alone; the official multi-pollutant index based on monitors can differ.

What to do this morning

  1. Check the latest ISPU for your city before heading out. This 13 October snapshot does not describe every place today.
  2. When your local ISPU is Unhealthy, cut back on long or strenuous outdoor activity. Children, older adults, and people with asthma or heart disease should take extra care to reduce exposure.
  3. If you must spend time outdoors when particle pollution is high, a well-fitting N95 or KN95 mask can help reduce particles inhaled. Reducing time in polluted air remains the first step; ordinary face masks do not offer the same PM2.5 protection.

The chart uses the latest ten values from the archived 14 September–13 October 2026 model data, covering 4–13 October; each value is a 24-hour PM2.5 mean across 514 representative points ending at 07:00 WIB, then converted to ISPU. City figures and the count of 164 come from a separate copy of the 13 October data saved on 14 October. Model archives and that copy can differ slightly after updates.
